Earning While Learning: Teens Working During the School Year

Is your teen planning to keep their summer job or start a new one this school year?

Here's what families need to know to stay compliant and keep teens safe while they earn!

 Minor Work Permit Required

Teens ages 14–17 must have a Minor Work Permit to work—no matter the season. If they already got one for summer, they’re good to go for the school year!

 How to Get a Permit

Find a Job  – Teens need a job offer first.

Download the Form  – Available from your school or online.

Complete & Sign  – Parent/guardian and employer must sign.

Submit to School  – Turn it in to the school district.

Start Working  – Once approved, they’re ready!

• No later than 7 PM on school nights

Ages 16–17:

All minors must get a 30-minute break after 5 consecutive hours.

Plan ahead so your teen can earn while they learn—safely and legally!
