Pioneer splash pad, Cedar Street projects updated

PIONEER — Council was recently updated on a couple of major projects coming for the village.

Village Administrator Anthony Burnett discussed a project for next year that would install a splash pad in the village, using grant funds secured from the state in the amount of $200,000.

He said there were multiple designs and quotes to choose from, but he provided council with a recommendation it approved later in the meeting for equipment, material and design services.

Burnett said the grant money would go toward the purchase of equipment for the splash pad, while the village will also provide work on the site and matching money. There are also donations planned toward the project.

“The village will be doing all the concrete work, stone, plumbing, site prep and running the water line over to it,” Burnett said.

He estimated the village cost to be around $50,000.

Burnett said he priced an option to add a water reclamation system and found that would add about $200,000 to the project.

“So it’s a very, very expensive avenue to take,” Burnett said.

He added plans for the Pioneer splash pad would have the system on a timer and that patrons would need to push a button to have the splash pad run for a period of time.

Burnett said the village has received about $4,300 in donations to the splash pad so far.

“We appreciate all that,” he added.

Burnett said Ohio Gas plans on coming into the village toward the end of the month to do some work on Cedar Street before a water and sewer project can begin there.

“They have to relocate the gas main for the new reconstruction of that street and they’ll be running all new services to every resident on that street,” Burnett said.

He added the relocation is expected to take about 20 days.

In addition, Burnett told council that letters were sent out to residents on the street informing them about 18 trees will also need to be removed from the area as part of the project.

“They’re in the path of the new water line, they’re encroaching the sidewalks, so we did send out a letter to them,” Burnett said, adding the letters went out a couple of weeks ago.

He also said he has heard from only one resident who wanted to express their opinion on it, but after discussion they understood the process.

Burnett said the tree removal will also likely start toward the end of the month.

The Cedar Street project will include replacing an eight-inch water line and a four-inch water line along the street with a new 12-inch water line. All residents and businesses along Cedar Street will then be connected to the new line.
